Nick's financial manager, Charles DuChamps, is blown up by a car bomb.

At the beginning of "Blood Money", Charles DuChamps, the elderly owner of the Maison DuChamps financial house, is blown up by a car bomb just after leaving work.

DuChamps's son, Sean, owes enormous gambling debts to George Walken, owner of the club Paparazzi. Walken has decided that DuChamps will be best able to pay him back by embezzling from Maison DuChamps if his father is dead and he has inherited the company. He therefore has the elder DuChamps murdered; and Sean duly steals a fortune from one of the accounts in order to pay off his debts.

Neither of them knows that the DeBrabant Foundation, whose investments have been stolen, is actually owned by Nick Knight.
