Daniel was orphaned in World War II during the bombing of London, and was living on the street, hungry and badly dressed, until the day he tried to pick Nick's pocket. Janette took a fancy to him; and he became a sort of adopted son to them all until Nick realized that LaCroix intended to bring the boy over—just to see what such a youngster would make of vampire life. However, although Nick warned Daniel to flee, it was too late.
