Dark Angel is a science fiction television series created by James Cameron and Charles H. Eglee for the Fox network. The show premiered premiered in the United States and Canada on 3 October 2000, and ran for two seasons, until 3 May 2002. It chronicles the life of Max Guevara (X5-452), a genetically enhanced human prototype super-soldier, portrayed by Jessica Alba as an adult, and Geneva Locke as a child. The program is set in Seattle, Washington, USA, but was actually filmed in Vancouver at Lions Gate Studios.
According to the series premise, a dozen enhanced children escaped in 2009 from a secret government institution codenamed Manticore, where they were born, raised and trained to be soldiers and assassins. Only months later, terrorists detonated an electromagnetic pulse weapon which destroyed the vast majority of computer and communication systems in the United States, throwing the country into utter chaos. Corruption and crime flourished, eventually leading to martial control of the population.
Ten years later, the United States is barely more than a Third World nation. Max lives in Seattle, illegally squatting in an abandoned building. She works at a bicycle messenger service in order to have a "sector pass" so she can move around the city, while a secret life as a cat burglar funds her search for her escaped "siblings", who scattered after their escape. Meanwhile, she is hunted by her former military handlers. Aiding her is Logan Cale (Michael Weatherly), an idealistic cyber-journalist who is trying to battle repression and corruption in post-apocalypse America.
The opening voiceover: "They designed her to be the perfect soldier... a human weapon...then she escaped. In a future not far from now...in a broken world... she is haunted by her past. She cannot run, she must fight...to discover her destiny."
