Remington Steele is an American television series, produced by MTM Enterprises and first broadcast on the NBC network from 1 October to 17 February 1987. The show combined the standard TV detective genre with ironic plotting and elements of romantic comedy.
The eponymous "Remington Steele" is the fictitious boss invented by Laura Holt (Stephanie Zimbalist), a private detective who finds that potential clients are unwilling to hire a woman. Business picks up dramatically when she invents "Remington Steele", named after her Remington typewriter and the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. However, in the first episode of the series, Holt encounters a thief (Pierce Brosnan), who—overhearing someone calling for "Remington Steele"—impulsively assumes the identity in order to escape a pair of murderous thugs. He chooses to make the alias permanent, an arrangement Holt pragmatically accepts because she realizes the advantages for her agency in having a figurehead boss. Although occasionally Steele uses techniques from cinematic mysteries to attempt to solve crimes, it is usually Laura who actually solves the case, giving Steele the credit as part of the pretense.
