Sailor Moon is the title of a Japanese media franchise created by Naoko Takeuchi, initially published as a manga series and then adapted into a series of anime versions. The story of the various metaseries revolves around the reincarnated defenders of a kingdom that once spanned the solar system.
The major characters—the Sailor Senshi (literally "Sailor Soldiers", but frequently translated as "Sailor Scouts") are teenaged girls who can transform themselves into superpowered heroines named for the moon and planets—for example, Sailor Moon, Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars. (The use of the word "Sailor" in their code names comes from a style of girls' school uniform popular in Japan, the sērā fuku or "sailor outfit", after which the Senshi's uniforms are modelled.) The elements of fantasy in the series are heavily symbolic and often based on mythology.
